Salon de Bibliotheek

"The artist is the creator of beautiful things.
To reveal art and conceal the artist is art’s aim.
The critic is he who can translate into another manner or a new material his impression of beautiful things."

"芸術家とは、美しいものを創造する者のことである。
芸術を露にし、芸術家自身を覆い隠すこと、それが芸術の目指すところである。
批評家とは、美しいものが与える印象を、異なる手法や新たな素材に翻訳できる者のことを言う。"

Art for art’s sake

/

I am a translator and portrait painter.

I have three unwavering philosophies when it comes to expression.

When I’m standing before the canvas, 'The face tells more than words.'

When I’m translating a character's dialogue, 'The words of the character reveal who they are.'

When I’m translating a classic novel, 'To ignore the meaning and rhythm of the original writing is a betrayal of the author’s intent.'

I became a translator because I was disappointed with the Japanese translations of my favourite classic English novels.

I became a portrait painter because the human being is a complicated subject.

Through painting, what I try to capture are the hidden emotions deep inside of the human spirit.

Through the translation of screenplays and literature, what I try to capture is the subtle nuances of the author’s voice, even though Japanese and English are so incredibly different.

Salon de Bibliotheek is the place where my two different forms of art cross over. Both reveal 'who we are'.

Art for art’s sake.
